Jharkhand Sports: Dhanbad’s Satyam, Srijani emerge winner, runner-up in TT championship

Dhanbad, September 2: In the 3rd Jharkhand State Ranking Table Tennis Championship held in Jamshedpur, Dhanbad’s Satyam Sourya and Srijani Chatterjee excelled in their respective under-19 events, with Satyam emerging as the champion and Srijani as the runner-up.

Satyam Sourya claimed the boys’ under-19 singles title with a decisive win over Animesh Kumar Pandey of Garhwa, finishing the final with scores of 11-07, 11-08, and 11-09.

In the semifinals, Satyam displayed impressive form, defeating Anil Kumar Mehta of Garhwa in straight sets: 11-03, 11-07, and 11-08.

This victory marked Satyam’s first appearance in a final, achieved without the support of a professional coach.

Srijani Chatterjee’s performance

Defending champion Srijani Chatterjee had to settle for the runner-up position despite a strong performance. She lost the final to Archita Dey of Jamshedpur with scores of 09-11, 08-11, and 09-11. Archita Dey triumphed with three titles in the championship.

Earlier, Srijani secured her place in the final by defeating Anjali of Garhwa in straight sets: 11-07, 11-09, and 11-06.

Srijani had previously won the under-19 singles title at the 2nd Jharkhand Ranking Championship in Dhanbad in 2023 and was the under-17 singles champion in 2022.

Jamshedpur-based table tennis experts praised Srijani Chatterjee’s skills and potential, noting that with proper training, she could excel on the international stage. Currently, she is guided by seasoned coaches Somen Mukherjee and Arivan Nandi from Kolkata, while national-level players Saket Sinha and S. Mahajan coach her in Dhanbad.

Dhanbad TT Association’s praise for players

Dhanbad District Table Tennis Association General Secretary Saket Kumar Sinha expressed satisfaction with the performance of Dhanbad players, highlighting the district’s talented junior players who are expected to make significant impacts in future competitions.

S. Mahajan, Binod Kumar Sinha, and other association officials congratulated both Satyam and Srijani for their achievements.
