Dhanbad, Jan 12:  The month-long ‘Science Fest’ of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) kick-started at the institute’s NAC Hall of the Academic Building.

Prof Nigel Mason, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Kent, while addressing as a key speaker in the inaugural session of the Fest, shed light on how atoms and molecules influence the world around us.

3 talks by renowned physicists

The Fest, which will continue till February 15, will feature three talks by renowned physicists and a debate, quiz, and research scholars’ conclave.

Notably, this was the second talk of Prof Mason at IIT (ISM) as earlier on February 7, 2023, he addressed the students and faculty members as part of the National Science Day, 2023 lecture series, during which he spoke on Global Scientific Challenges and responsibility of scientists in presenting them to public audiences.

Fraud and misrepresentation in science

His talk last year also focused on issues like how the scientific community deals with fraud and misrepresentation in science. The conversation also dealt with the role of scientists and the scientific community in directly informing the public on scientific matters, even if they are unpalatable truths.

Rolling out the details of the month-long Science Fest, a member of the organising committee said that a debate competition would be organized as part of the Fest for UG and PG students on January 25 between 6 and 8 pm, which will be followed by the conclave of research scholars scheduled on Feb 3 from 9 am onwards.

Research scholar’s conclave

The UG and PG students can also join the research scholar’s conclave,” said Professor Bobby Antony, head of the Department of Physics, IIT (ISM).

“Prof Ajit Mohan Srivastava of Institute of Physics, Bhubaneshwar, will deliver the 2nd talk of the series on the topic of ‘Detection of Gravitational waves, a new window to the universe during the same day,” said Prof Antony.

JNU school of computation

The third talk under the series will be delivered by Anirban Chakraborty of the School of Computational and Integrative Sciences of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on February 7. A quiz competition for all UG and PG students and research scholars will be held on February 15 from 6 pm onwards.

The award ceremony and cultural programmes of Science Fest will be held on March 9.
