Jamshedpur, July 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for eight districts of Jharkhand on Friday, warning of intense showers as the southwest monsoon remains active over the state.
Ranchi, Bokaro and Dhanbad are among the districts likely to receive heavy rain during the day, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Eight districts under heavy rain warning
According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the IMD’s Meteorological Centre, Ranchi, at 10 am on July 24, the districts under the heavy rainfall warning are Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Khunti, Saraikela-Kharsawan and East Singhbhum.
The weather office has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at isolated places across Jharkhand.
Cool weather continues across Jharkhand
The IMD’s realised weather report said weather conditions remained relatively cool across the state due to widespread cloud cover and intermittent rainfall.
Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 27.3°C, which was 2.5°C below normal, while Jamshedpur registered 28.4°C, nearly 4°C below normal, highlighting the impact of the active southwest monsoon.
Koderma records highest rainfall
Among the major observatories, Daltonganj recorded 9.7 mm of rainfall during the previous 24 hours, followed by Chaibasa with 3.1 mm and Ranchi with 0.2 mm.
Although the Jamshedpur observatory did not record rainfall, the Automated Weather Station (AWS) at Baharagora in East Singhbhum received 19 mm of rain.
The highest rainfall in the state was recorded at Koderma AWS with 52.5 mm, followed by Kurdeg (Simdega) with 26.6 mm, Jamshedpur PTO with 25 mm, and Maithon in Dhanbad with 24 mm.
Meanwhile, Pakur recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 34.3°C, while Latehar registered the lowest minimum temperature at 20.6°C.
IMD advises caution
The IMD has advised people to remain alert during periods of heavy rainfall, avoid waterlogged roads, and stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.
With the southwest monsoon expected to remain active over the next few days, several parts of Jharkhand are likely to witness further spells of moderate to heavy rain. While the rainfall is expected to provide relief from humid conditions, it may also increase the risk of localized flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
