Dhanbad, June 15: K Prabhakar Rao, secretary of the Jharkhand Badminton Association (JBA), has been appointed to lead the Indian Para Badminton contingent at the Asian Para Badminton Championship 2024 in Nakhon, Thailand, scheduled from June 17 to July 2.
This prestigious nomination by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) comes as a recognition of Rao’s exceptional leadership during the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2022, where Indian para shuttlers delivered a stellar performance. His vast international experience has once again earned the BAI’s trust for this critical responsibility.
A Historic First for Eastern India
Rao becomes the first sports administrator from the eastern zone to head the Indian para-badminton team in an international tournament. Currently serving as BAI’s Joint Secretary and Para-Badminton India’s Chairman, Rao is a key figure in shaping India’s para-badminton strategy.

Known to be a close aide of BAI President Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the Chief Minister of Assam, Rao has been actively involved with BAI for over a decade, playing a crucial role in nurturing talent and building India’s para-badminton infrastructure.
State Pride for Jharkhand
A senior official from the Jharkhand Badminton Association expressed pride in Rao’s appointment.
“It is a proud moment for Jharkhand. Prabhakar Rao has been an integral part of Indian badminton for years. His vision and mentorship have played a vital role in elevating India’s global standing in para-badminton,” said the official.
Medal Hopes High
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Rao expressed optimism about India’s prospects in the upcoming championship.
“We have a strong squad, and I am confident our players will secure at least 7 to 8 medals at the Nakhon championship,” he said.
Gaurav Khanna, India’s ace para-badminton coach, will head the coaching team for the tournament.
