Dhanbad, April 20: In a significant step towards promoting women in STEM, a family from Jharkhand’s Giridih district has established a ₹1 crore scholarship fund to support female students at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

GV Raghavan Centenary Memorial Scholarship Launched

The newly launched GV Raghavan Centenary Memorial Scholarship Scheme will benefit girl students from economically weaker sections who are pursuing careers in Mining, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geology, and Applied Geophysics at the prestigious institute.

The scholarship will cover the annual tuition fees of eligible students enrolled through the IIT-JEE system under the Merit-Cum-Means (MCM) category, including those in the 5-year Integrated M.Tech programmes.

MoA Signed, Ceremony Graced by Dignitaries

A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to formalise the scholarship was signed on Saturday, in a ceremony attended by key academic figures. Coal India Limited Chairman PM Prasad and IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra joined the event virtually.

Prof. Mishra, speaking from Delhi, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Raghavan family for their “generous contribution towards empowering women in STEM through this impactful initiative.”

A Family’s Legacy of Support

The family of Late GV Raghavan, including his son, daughter, in-laws, and grandchildren, were present at the ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

The event was presided over by Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM), with other dignitaries in attendance including Prof. Rajni Singh, Dean of Corporate Communications, Prof. R.M. Bhattacharjee, Dean of International Relations and Alumni Affairs, and Prof. Rajiv Upadhyay.

This initiative marks a meaningful step in encouraging diversity and inclusion in traditionally male-dominated fields, setting a precedent for philanthropic support in technical education.
