New Delhi, Feb 21: Legendary radio host Ameen Sayani passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91 from a heart attack, his son Rajil Sayani confirmed.
Rajil Sayani reported that the renowned radio host experienced a heart attack on Tuesday evening and was subsequently transported to Mumbai’s HN Reliance Hospital, where he passed away.
“The doctors at the hospital attended him but couldn’t save him and he was declared dead, ” Rajil stated adding that his funeral will be held on Thursday.

“His funeral will take place on Thursday, as the family is waiting for some relatives to reach Mumbai today”, he stated.
Who is Ameen Sayani?
Ameen Sayani, who was born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, was well-known to audiences for many years due to his fascinating flair and melodic voice. He started off as an English-language broadcaster before switching to Hindi following India’s independence.
Sayani became extremely well-known for his radio show ‘Geetmala,’ which was instrumental in making radio listening grow in popularity in India.

Hosted by Sayani, ‘Geetmala’ became a nationwide sensation, featuring beloved Hindi film music and enchanting audiences for many years. His distinctive greeting of “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (sisters and brothers) became instantly recognizable and widely copied.
Over the course of his six-decade career, Sayani produced and presented more than 54,000 radio programs and provided voiceovers for 19,000 commercials and jingles.
Sayani also appeared in a number of films, such as ‘Qatl’, ‘Bhoot Bungla’, ‘Teen Devian’ and ‘Boxer’.

Through his work, he played an important role in revolutionising Indian broadcasting and nurtured a very special bond with his listeners. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family, admirers and all radio lovers. May his soul rest in peace,” PM Modi stated in a post on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences for the demise of the renowned radio icon Ameen Sayani.
“Pained to know that Shri Ameen Sayani Ji the voice of the radio is no more. Sayani Ji leaves a void behind that will be difficult to fill. His golden legacy makes him immortal. My sincerest condolences to his near and dear ones and millions of admirers. Om Shanti,” Amit Shah said in a post on X.
