New Delhi, March 28: The Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, introducing a modern legal framework to regulate the rights, liabilities, and responsibilities of carriers involved in transporting goods by sea.

The new legislation replaces the Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925, which had been in place for a century.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the importance of the bill, stating that it brings much-needed updates to outdated maritime transportation regulations.

The new law applies to ships carrying goods from India to foreign ports as well as domestic shipping between Indian ports.

With its broader scope, the legislation ensures comprehensive oversight of both international and domestic sea transport, providing legal clarity for stakeholders in the shipping industry.
