Madhubani, June 18: A contestant ate 12 mangoes in two minutes in Mithila Mango Mahotsav held at Sir Ganganath Jha Vachnalaya, Sarisab-Pahi around 18 km away from Madhubani district headquarters.
A total of 44 participants (22 each in senior and junior competitions) of twin districts Madhubani and Darbhanga reached in final round after screening in preliminary stage, in which Anuj Kumar Jha (24) of Lalganj village, ate 12 mangoes and emerged winner, while Nitesh Mandal (11) of Pahi village ate six mangoes and became junior champion.
The organiser, a Delhi based senior journalist Madan Jha, said that in the mango eating competition each participant was given two minutes’ time to eat as many as mangoes as he can. A panel of arbiters were monitoring and counting participants’ intake.

“Mission of the mango eating competition was to get people of Mithilanchal interested in mango fruit and planting trees. In the competition right from children to senior persons participated in the qualifying round and a massive gathering encouraged the participants,” said organizer Madan Jha.

In the function Banaras Hindu University (BHU) alumnus cum social activist Umanath Mishra, retired Prof Asarfi Kamat, famous environmentalist of Madhubani district Ajaydhari Singh awarded the winners of mango eating competition.
Two-day Mithila Mango Mahotsav was jointly organized by Ayachi Nagar Yuva Sangathan and Ismad Foundation. On the first day, a painting competition of school children and an exhibition of mango varieties were held, in which 165 different kinds of mangoes were displayed. On the occasion school students were also informed about the mango.
“Countless mango growers of the twin districts came up with their different items for display in which 165 were selected to put up in exhibition,” said Madan Jha.
Vicky Mandal conducted the function while Vikash Sahu proposed vote of thanks. Amal Kumar Jha, Uday Nath Mishra, Chhaya Jha, Vibha Jha, Ramesh Thakur Harsh Nath Jha and others played major roles in making the Mithila Mango Mahotsav success.
