Manipur CM announces deportation of first batch of Myanmar nationals

Imphal, March 9: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the deportation of the first group of citizens of Myanmar who had allegedly entered India illegally.

“First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today”, Manipur CM Singh posted on X.

The chief minister stated that even though India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, the government has systematically provided humanitarian refuge and assistance to people escaping the situation in Myanmar.

The Chief Minister also uploaded a video on his social media platform.

In a later media briefing, the Chief Minister emphasized that they were ensuring adherence to legal procedures in the deportation of Myanmar nationals.

“The number is huge so we cannot deport them all at once. We are deporting them one by one and there are some legal procedures that we have to follow. We are following them, deporting them & will continue to deport,” he stated.

Regarding the National Register of Citizens’ (NRC) implementation, CM stated, “The decision has to be taken by the central government. Our Assembly has passed the resolution and recommended it, but now the rest of the work is in the hands of the Union Ministry, So I will make the request and will follow it.”
