Jamshedpur, Jan 28: The carcass of a dented tusker was discovered in Baihatu village under the Tonto police station area of neighbouring West Singhbhum district on Wednesday, triggering concern among residents and forest officials.

The elephant was found lying motionless in an open area close to human habitation early Wednesday morning. Villagers were the first to notice the carcass and immediately informed the forest department.

Soon after, a team of forest officials, including senior officers, reached the spot and cordoned off the area to prevent crowding and possible tampering.

Cause of Death Yet to Be Ascertained

Preliminary observations indicate that the tusker may have died several hours before it was discovered. However, the exact cause of death remains unknown.

Forest department officials said a detailed post-mortem examination will be conducted in the presence of veterinary experts to determine whether the elephant died due to natural causes or external factors such as electrocution, poisoning, or poaching.

Samples have been collected and sent for forensic analysis.

Concerns Over Human–Elephant Conflict

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over frequent elephant movement and rising human–elephant conflict in the forest fringe areas of West Singhbhum.

Residents have demanded stronger preventive measures, including better monitoring of elephant corridors and timely alerts to villages, to prevent such incidents.

Local authorities said strict action would be taken if any foul play is detected. They also stressed the need for coordinated efforts between the forest department and local communities to ensure better protection of wildlife in the region.
