Narendra Tomar elected Madhya Pradesh assembly’s speaker unanimously

Bhopal, Dec 20: Narendra Singh Tomar, a prominent BJP figure and ex-Union minister, was unanimously chosen as the speaker of the Madhya Pradesh legislative assembly on Wednesday.

On Monday, the recently elected assembly convened for its first session.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav put forth a proposal for the election of 66-year-old Tomar as the speaker, and this was supported by the leader of the opposition, Umang Singhar.

A proposal to nominate Tomar as speaker was also made by former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. It was seconded by former Union minister Prahlad Patel, who was just elected to the state assembly from the Narsinghpur constituency.

Five other proposals were made in support of Tomar, three of which came from opposing Congress MLAs, Ajay Singh, Jaivardhan Singh, and Rajendra Kumar Singh.

Pro-tem Speaker Gopal Bhargava announced that Tomar had been unanimously elected to the speaker’s position following the voice vote.

With the backing of the opposition Congress, Tomar filed his nomination for the position of speaker on Monday.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav extended his congratulations to Tomar and expressed gratitude to the opposition for supporting the election of the speaker unanimously.
