Daltonganj, Dec 20: Deputy Commissioner Shashi Ranjan took a ‘class’ at the Rajkiya Madhya Vidyalaya Kishunpur under the Paton block limits on Tuesday.
The DC’s class was less of the students, more of the teachers. If the learning of the students was found to be poor, the working attitude of the teachers was pathetic.
The teachers looked as if they were to come and go only and their responsibility is unaccountable.
“I saw some of the notebooks of the students of class 7. It had a plethora of wrong spellings. The students had made glaring mistakes in the spelling of the Hindi words. It is very unfortunate,” said the DC.
Shashi Ranjan had asked a question in class 7 which was bound to outwit many.
He said he asked the students to explain as to how many types of Mridha are there.

The entire class was in drowsy numbness, he said. The teacher in the classroom too looked terribly ignorant of the meaning of Mridha.
Shashi Ranjan later explained that Mridha means ‘mitti’ or what is called in English soil.
DC Shashi Ranjan was interrupted here by the Jharkhand Story correspondent for asking class 7 students to explain Mridha an expression not many know and this correspondent too was honest enough to tell the DC that this journalist did not know exactly what Mridha is.
The DC didn’t accept that he asked a stiff question, unfit for class 7 students rather he charged “Let students and all have a good knowledge of geography.”
The DC didn’t ask for English, knowing perhaps when the standard of teaching Hindi is so dismal, it’s no use to ask for English.
He did ask for Maths. He said the students tried answering. To a question that teaching needs to be improved in the government schools, nodding in affirmation he said, “I am toying with the idea of bringing in RAIL in a few government schools.”
BDO Paton Amit Kumar Jha said the DC’s displeasure must spur teachers to work and teach more sincerely.
RAIL is regular assessment of improved learning he explained. RAIL will help connect students to teachers and vice versa. It’s a weekly assessment of the students vis a vis teachers as to how far or how much there is the improvement in learning or in imparting teaching.
