New Delhi, June 26: Om Birla was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. This decision was taken by voice vote. The opposition did not press for a division vote.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had fielded Om Birla, a third-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, as its candidate. The opposition INDIA Block had fielded Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-time MP from Mavelikara, Kerala. Om Birla will assume this responsibility for the second time.
The motion to propose Birla as the Speaker was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and backed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
This proposal was put to vote in the House by Protem Speaker (Acting Speaker) Bhartruhari Mahtab and the House approved it by voice vote. After this, Acting Speaker Mahtab announced the election of Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Prime Minister Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took Birla to the Speaker’s chair. When Birla took the Speaker’s chair, Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Rijiju congratulated and wished him.
