THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Kathmandu, Sept 10: Nepal’s Generation Z (Gen Z) protesters have forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government to accept defeat, effectively ousting him from power.

The protesters have now put forward a series of political and social demands, including rewriting or amending the constitution, implementing major governance reforms, and investigating wealth accumulated by politicians over the past three decades.

During the movement, it was announced that all those who lost their lives in the protests should be officially recognized as martyrs, and their families should receive state honors and compensation. The organizers also pledged to launch special programs to tackle unemployment, curb migration, and eliminate social injustices.

In a statement, the protesters said, “This movement is not for any party or individual, but for an entire generation and the future of the country. Peace is important, but it can only be achieved on the foundation of a new political order.” The group expressed hope that the President and the Nepal Army would positively implement their proposals.

What has happened so far?

Amid protests against alleged corruption, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned and left the country, following which the army took control on Tuesday night. Reports suggest that Oli has flown to Dubai after stepping down.

Earlier, protesters rallying against government corruption stormed and attacked the official and private residences of the Prime Minister, President, several ministers, and top leaders on Tuesday.

They also set fire to the Parliament building and the Supreme Court. Several banks were vandalized and looted. Demonstrators lynched a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who had ordered police to fire at protesting youths.

Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, his wife and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba were beaten inside their residence. Rajlakshmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, was locked inside her home and burned alive.

Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel was chased and thrashed in the streets, with viral videos showing protesters kicking him.

Amid escalating violence, Tribhuvan International Airport was shut down, and the army took control of security. President Ram Chandra Paudel and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel appealed to protesters to remain calm and come forward for dialogue.
