THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, March 4: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched an investigation into the death of a Nepali student at Odisha’s KIIT University amid claims of assault on students who were protesting.

NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo announced that a team has been assembled to look into the case and will submit its findings by March 10.

A third-year B.Tech student was discovered dead in her hostel room on February 16, sparking protests from Nepali students who accused a fellow student of harassment. They also claimed that the university had ignored several complaints regarding the issue.

Talking to news agency ANI Kanoongo mentioned that the NHRC received a complaint from the Kalinga Rights Forum, which claimed that the Nepali student’s death was a suicide, though this has not been confirmed yet.

The complaint also indicated that Nepali students who protested the incident were allegedly beaten up. Kanoongo confirmed that the investigation team will visit the university to probe the issue and present a report before the 10th of March.

Previously, Nepal’s National Human Rights Commission had sent a formal request to the Indian NHRC, urging them to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the student at KIIT.

They called for justice for the victim and the mistreated students, ensuring the safety of all students at the university, and holding the responsible individuals accountable through a thorough investigation.
