Jamshedpur, April 4: A highly significant and sensitive dialogue session focusing on mental health was organized at the Adityapur-based National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur today.

The session was conducted by Jeevan Suicide Prevention Centre— a voluntary organization that has long been providing support and counselling to individuals suffering from mental stress, depression, and suicidal tendencies.
The primary objective of the session was to spread awareness among students about mental health, help them understand issues related to stress and depression, and share effective ways to prevent extreme outcomes like suicide.

The session was specifically designed for students who may experience mental distress due to the competitive academic environment, career anxieties, family pressures, or personal challenges.
Representatives from the Jeevan Suicide Prevention Centre shared details about their services and resources.
They highlighted that the centre operates 24/7 and provides free, confidential, and empathetic counselling to people in crisis. Their mission is not only to prevent suicide but also to empower individuals to face life’s challenges with mental resilience.

During the event, Deepak Dokaniya (Trustee), Gurpreet Kaur Bhatia (Joint Director) and Suchita Trehan from Jeevan Centre addressed the students.
They emphasized that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and it is essential to understand that every problem has a solution — all one needs is timely help. They also underlined the importance of treating mental health with the same seriousness as physical health.
Mental health experts Achinto Banerjee and Rajeev Ranjan educated students about early signs of stress and depression such as irregular sleep, social withdrawal, lack of interest, feelings of hopelessness, and self-blame.
They encouraged students to recognize their own mental condition and to seek help without hesitation when needed.
The session covered various important topics including exam-related stress, early symptoms of depression, the necessity of psychological support, and identifying suicidal tendencies in time.
Students were assured that mental health issues can affect anyone, and seeking help is a sign of strength — not weakness.
