THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Dec 29: Following Rajiv Ranjan aka Lalan Singh, who gave his resignation from the position of JDU president during the party’s executive conference in Delhi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was chosen the new president of the Janata Dal (United), marking a significant political shift. The news of possible leadership changes follows weeks of rumours and denials from JDU allies and leaders.

Lalan Singh offered his resignation as president due to his desire to concentrate more and take part fully in the approaching elections. He then put forward Nitish Kumar, who was elected in a matter of minutes, to succeed him as the party’s leader.

Ram Kumar Sharma, general secretary of JDU, stated, “Lalan Singh first proposed his resignation and it was accepted. Simultaneously, the resolution was passed that Nitish Kumar would be the next president.”

With the important 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching, Nitish Kumar’s ascent to the JDU presidency represents a strategic move. Kumar’s new post offers him additional power to negotiate alliances and a seat-sharing formula for Bihar, coming only days after the Opposition INDIA bloc met. The resolution passed during the national executive meeting empowers him to initiate discussions on these matters with other alliance members.

As Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is being backed by Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal as a possible PM candidate, a number of JDU leaders are pushing for Nitish Kumar to head the INDIA group.

Jitan Ram Manjhi takes a dig

After the leadership transition, Jitan Ram Manjhi, the former chief minister of Bihar, wasted no time in mocking Nitish Kumar. “Under Nitish Kumar’s three-year plan, Lalan Singh has also been wiped out. By the way, Lalan babu should have understood that since Nitish Kumar did not consider [George] Fernandes, RCP [Singh], Sharad Yadav and Digvijaya Singh his own, why would he be any different? There is no one that Nitish hasn’t stabbed in the back,” he remarked in a post on X.
