THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Kabul, Sept 1: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan early Monday, killing more than 600 people and leaving over 1,000 injured.

Entire mud-and-stone villages were reduced to rubble, while landslides blocked key roads and disrupted communication, severely complicating rescue and relief efforts.

Khaama Press reported that the worst-hit areas were the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara in Kunar province, while Nangarhar province recorded at least nine deaths and several injuries.

Authorities confirmed the devastating scale of casualties and issued urgent appeals for international assistance.

Helicopters and rescue teams have been dispatched, but their work is being slowed by treacherous terrain and widespread damage to infrastructure.

The disaster highlights Afghanistan’s acute vulnerability to earthquakes, particularly in its mountainous and remote regions, and comes less than two years after another deadly quake struck the country.

Following the initial jolt, aftershocks of 4.7, 4.3, and 5.0 magnitude were also recorded at varying depths near the epicentre, further rattling the region. Tremors from the 6.0 magnitude quake were also felt across several parts of neighbouring Pakistan.
