Daltonganj, October 31: A village mukhiya rescued a distressed woman and her two-hour-old daughter from a paddy field in Palamu on Friday night, Chhatarpur police station officer-in-charge Sourav Choubey said.
Jahir Ansari, mukhiya of Munkeri Panchayat, found Anju Devi, 37, and her newborn near a paddy field in Manhu village around 10.10 pm. The woman appeared distressed, sources said.
Ansari said he received a telephone call about a woman near a place of worship who appeared upset. He later found the mother and baby beside the field. The newborn was lying unclothed in light drizzle, while the mother appeared physically and mentally distressed.
“I took the woman and her infant in a four-wheeler and rushed to the sub-divisional hospital, Chhatarpur, where the woman and her infant were at once taken care of,” Ansari said.
Mother and Newborn Given Medical Care
Deputy Superintendent of the Sub-Divisional Hospital, Chhatarpur, Dr Rajesh Agarwal said the woman received third-stage labour management and was stabilised.
The newborn’s umbilical cord was safely cut. The baby was also placed under a radiant warmer to address hypothermia, or a drop in body temperature, the doctor said.
After receiving medication and injections, the mother and baby were referred to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in Daltonganj. Their condition was stable, MMCH sources said.
The woman’s husband, Ravindra Oraon, 41, is a migrant worker, according to the report.
Police Find No Evidence of Foul Play
Asked whether there was any possibility of infanticide or human sacrifice, Choubey said police had found no evidence suggesting either. He said the woman appeared traumatised, but investigators had not found anything indicating that the infant was at risk of harm.
Ansari also said he had not seen anything at the scene that suggested foul play.
