The Rs 292 crore North Urimari Coal Handling Plant is an arrangement for evacuating coal from the North Urimari open-cast mine to the nearest railway circuit for further transportation to power plants and other consumers nationwide. Presently, coal from these mines is brought by road through tippers to rail siding.

The mechanised first-mile connectivity concept in coal transportation is being implemented in the coal sector by incorporating the principle of the ‘PM Gatishakti Master Plan’ of the Government of India.

The plants consist of receiving hoppers, a crusher, a coal storage bunker of 20000-tonne capacity and conveyor belts, finally leading up to the silo bunker of 4000-tonne capacity through which coal is transferred to railway wagons. The system will handle 7.5 million tonnes of coal per annum.

It is a closed-loop, fully mechanised system that will bring speed and efficiency by eliminating transportation by road and thus reducing diesel consumption. In this way, increasing the coal loading and transportation capacity will ensure an uninterrupted coal supply.

In addition, it will improve the region’s environmental baseline by reducing airborne dust and vehicular exhaust. Overall, the project will use off-road coal transport.

Tripling of Tori-Shivpur Rail Line

The tripling of the Tori-Shivpur rail line is for the evacuation of 100 MT Per Annum coal from various ongoing and upcoming coal mining projects in North Karanpura coalfields. It will also contribute to coal evacuation for upcoming commercial coal blocks. The distance of the Tori-Shivpur dedicated coal corridor is 44.37 km, and there are six intermediate stations, namely Biratoli, Kusumahi, Balumath, Bukru, Phulbasia and Manatu which will be used as sidings and yards.

Built by East-Central Railway, this rail section connects with Barkakana-Garhwa main line at Tori station. The current rate of evacuation of coal is about 45 MTPA. With 3rd rail line and yard modelling, its capacity will increase to 100 MTPA.

An important aspect of the Tori-Shivpur section is the operation of long-haul trains (goods trains with 120 wagons). It ensures uninterrupted supply to various powerhouses.
