New Delhi, Jan 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the “Mission Mausam” during the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi. He also visited an exhibition at the event.
The ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Andrea Celeste Saulo.
About Mission Mausam
‘Mission Mausam’ aims to revolutionize weather monitoring and forecasting by introducing advanced surveillance technologies, including state-of-the-art atmospheric observation tools, next-generation radars and satellites, and powerful computing systems to strengthen India’s climate preparedness.

This initiative also seeks to deepen knowledge of weather and climate dynamics while offering comprehensive air quality insights to support long-term strategies for effective weather management and intervention.

PM Modi highlights advancements in weather technology
PM Modi while addressing the event, stated, “The progress of scientific institutions of any country shows its awareness towards science. Research and innovation in scientific institutions is a part of the temperament of the new India. In the last 10 years, there has been an unprecedented expansion of the infrastructure and technology of IMD.”
Prime Minister Modi described 150 years of the nation’s premier weather agency as a “remarkable journey of India’s modern science and technology.” He emphasized that advancements in meteorological technology have significantly enhanced the country’s disaster management capabilities, benefiting not only India but also the global community.
Highlighting this progress, he noted that India’s Flash Flood Guidance System now plays a vital role in providing critical information to neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
PM Modi unveiled a new postage stamp and a special commemorative coin to celebrate these milestones.
