THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Kolkata, August 27: ‘Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj’ has called for a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Tuesday, the students and citizens held a rally. During the protest, they broke through police barricades, prompting the police to use lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators.

The students began throwing stones, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells and use water cannons.

Protesters assembled at Howrah Bridge, scaling police barricades and engaging in clashes with police personnel during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march.

They were observed dismantling and dragging away the barricades set up in the Santragachi area on the way to the Secretariat.

In response to the Nabbanna campaign, the Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal has implemented stringent security measures.

Over 6,000 police personnel deployed, barricading at 19 places

It is reported that over 6,000 police personnel have been deployed in Kolkata. Barricades have been set up at 19 locations, and five aluminium barricades have been installed at key spots. There is a three-layer security perimeter outside the West Bengal State Secretariat Nabbanna building.

According to reports, throughout the day, Miraj Khalid, the Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) of Kolkata Police, will monitor CCTV footage from the police control room.

According to information, the leftist parties have distanced themselves from the student protests. They have alleged that it is a BJP-RSS conspiracy to divert attention from other issues.

Heightened security, additional forces mobilized

More than 160 DCRF personnel have been stationed around the Nabbanna building. The Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and DGP have been present at the Nabbanna building since 10 a.m. The Commissioner of Police, Vineet Goyal, is managing operations from the police headquarters control room. Sources indicate that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also expected to visit the Nabbanna building.

Additional forces have been brought in from various districts in Kolkata. Combat forces, RAF, QRT, HRFS, and water cannons have been deployed. The police have requested information from the organizers of the Nabbanna campaign regarding the leaders leading the rally. They have asked for details about the route, timing, and the expected number of participants in the rally. The organizers have yet to respond to these queries.

The TMC is attacking the opposition over the Nabbanna campaign. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has accused the BJP of attempting to incite unrest, alleging that there is an effort to create political instability in the state.
