PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Ranchi, Sept 27: Indian Railways has approved the long-awaited Sultanganj–Katoria rail line, a landmark project expected to ease the journey of millions of Shiva devotees and boost regional growth in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Key Route Details

The 74.8 km stretch will pass through Asarganj, Tarapur, and Belhar, with stations planned at Sultanganj, Katoria, Asarganj, Tarapur, Belhar, Srinagar, and Suyabthan. Katoria will be developed into a junction station, connecting the new line with the existing Banka–Jasidih route.

25-Year-Old Demand Fulfilled

Envisioned 25 years ago, the project has been consistently championed by Godda BJP MP Dr. Nishikant Dubey, who played a key role in ensuring its approval.

Major Relief for Devotees

For millions of Kanwariyas (devotees carrying holy water), the new line will be a game-changer. The current 131 km rail distance between Sultanganj and Deoghar via Bhagalpur, Banka, and Katoria will be reduced to around 101 km, cutting travel time and easing congestion during the annual pilgrimage to Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar.

Economic and Regional Impact

Estimated at Rs 1,261 crore, the Sultanganj–Katoria project carries significance beyond spiritual convenience. It is expected to:

Boost Tourism: Better access to Deoghar will attract more pilgrims and tourists throughout the year.

Generate Jobs: Construction and railway operations will create employment opportunities for local youth.

Strengthen Trade: Improved connectivity will benefit small businesses, farmers, and traders by linking rural areas to larger markets.

Drive Growth: The new line will enhance transport links between Bihar and Jharkhand, fueling long-term economic integration and development.

A Strategic Step Forward

Officials describe the project as a balance of cultural and economic priorities—easing the spiritual journey of devotees while laying the foundation for stronger regional connectivity in eastern India.
