PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, March 20: Tata Steel has commissioned a scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plant in Ludhiana, marking a major step towards low-carbon steel production in India.

Shift Towards Green Steel

Built at an investment of around Rs 3,200 crore, the plant has an annual production capacity of 0.75 million tonnes and is designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions. The facility will operate largely on renewable energy and use steel scrap as its primary raw material.

The plant was inaugurated in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, along with Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran and Tata Steel CEO T. V. Narendran, besides senior officials.

Chandrasekaran described the project as a step towards a greener industrial future, while Narendran said it aligns with the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

Focus on Circular Economy

The plant will use recycled steel scrap, with a significant portion sourced from Tata Steel’s recycling facility in Haryana. It will manufacture construction-grade rebars under the Tata Tiscon brand, strengthening the company’s footprint in the infrastructure sector.

Tata Steel has also undertaken several community initiatives in and around Ludhiana, including skill training for students, women’s livelihood programmes, solar lighting, climate-resilient farming, waste management, and scholarships.

The commissioning of the plant highlights a shift towards cleaner steelmaking and reinforces Tata Steel’s focus on sustainable and responsible manufacturing.
