The appointment of Ravindra Rai as the Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) amid the assembly elections in Jharkhand has generated interest, but it has also stirred concerns about the motives and potential pitfalls of this decision.
As the BJP is in the top gear for upcoming elections, Rai’s promotion appears to be a calculated attempt to address internal dynamics and regional issues. Yet critics suggest the move may be driven more by immediate electoral gains than by a vision for long-term stability.
Calculated Move by BJP in Jharkhand
Ravindra Rai, a senior leader with deep roots in Jharkhand’s political sphere, has served as state BJP president and has been an influential figure since his early days in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Many analysts view his appointment as a strategic effort to stabilize electoral equations and address internal party dynamics. However, critics argue that this move may reflect the BJP’s focus on short-term electoral gains, with limited emphasis on building structural stability within the party.

Notably, some political analysts suggest that this calculated decision is aimed primarily at securing Babulal Marandi’s victory in the Dhanwar constituency. By addressing the Bhumihar community’s dissatisfaction and securing their support, the BJP is perceived to be bolstering Marandi’s position for the upcoming elections. Yet relying on this approach could limit the focus to one constituency rather than fostering a more inclusive, statewide agenda.
Discontent Among Bhumihars
In Jharkhand’s Giridih district, including the Giridih and Koderma Lok Sabha constituencies, the Bhumihar community holds substantial influence. Recently, however, dissatisfaction has been brewing within this community due to BJP’s candidate selection decisions. In the last assembly election, retired I.G. Lakshman Singh, a leader from the Bhumihar community, was fielded as the BJP candidate for the Dhanwar Assembly constituency. This time, however, the BJP ticket went to Babulal Marandi, causing disappointment within the Bhumihar community, which expected a candidate reflective of their political weight.
So, the BJP’s decision to appoint a prominent Bhumihar leader like Ravindra Rai as Working President is seen as a direct attempt to pacify the community. However, some observers argue that this choice is more of a reactionary response than a balanced strategy. Critics suggest that focusing too heavily on appeasing one influential group could alienate other communities, setting a precedent for similar demands from other factions.
Unique Situation
Babulal Marandi, currently serving as BJP’s state president, is also the MLA from the Dhanwar Assembly constituency. He initially ran as a Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) candidate before the JVM merged with the BJP, which brought Marandi into a central role within the party. Now, Ravindra Rai, another influential leader from the Bhumihar community and also from the Dhanwar region, has been appointed as the Working President.
This dual leadership from the same district and constituency is a rare, somewhat risky move in Jharkhand’s political history. Generally, the BJP emphasizes regional balance to maintain stability within its organizational structure. Some political analysts caution that concentrating two senior leaders from the same constituency could create power struggles or localized competition, potentially leading to factionalism within the party. Critics worry that such a decision reflects the BJP’s preference for short-term electoral wins over a balanced, statewide leadership framework.
Potential Challenges and Expectations
Some political observers are concerned that relying on such community appeasement tactics could set a precedent, with leadership roles becoming more about electoral convenience than about nurturing future leaders. This approach could lead other communities to demand similar concessions, stretching party resources and risking fragmentation.
Broader Impact on Jharkhand politics
Ultimately, this strategy reflects a broader trend in Indian politics, where regional and community-based appointments increasingly shape party tactics in states like Jharkhand. The coming months will determine whether the BJP’s high-stakes approach yields the desired electoral gains or brings forth internal challenges that may require further adjustments.
