New Delhi, June 12: The Supreme Court slammed the Delhi government on Wednesday for the persistence of the tanker mafia and water wastage in the city, demanding to know the steps taken to tackle these problems.

Will ask Delhi Police to take action if Delhi govt fails to address issue: SC

A vacation bench consisting of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale warned the Delhi government that if it fails to address the issue of the tanker mafia, the court will instruct the Delhi Police to take necessary action.

“Why were false statements made before this court? Water is coming from Himachal Pradesh then where is the water going in Delhi? There is so much spillage, tanker mafias etc. what measures have you taken in this regard?” the SC questioned.

“People are suffering, we are seeing visuals on every news channel. What measures have you taken to control water wastage if water scarcity is a recurring problem in summers,” the bench stated.

SC seeks affidavit on action taken

Representing the Delhi government, Advocate Shadan Farasat stated that measures have been taken, such as extensive disconnection of water supplies, to prevent excessive water wastage.

The Supreme Court instructed the Delhi government to file an affidavit outlining the measures taken to tackle water loss. The case will be revisited on Thursday, June 13.

The Supreme Court is considering a petition filed by the Delhi government, requesting an order for Haryana to release additional water, which was supplied by Himachal Pradesh, to help alleviate the water scarcity in the national capital.

During the proceedings, the top court raised serious objections to the contradictory statement made by Himachal Pradesh and demanded the presence of a state official at the court hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
