New Delhi, March 19: The Supreme Court has scheduled April 16 for hearing multiple petitions challenging the appointment process of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) under the new 2023 law.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing NGO Association for Democratic Reforms, urged an urgent hearing, arguing that the case concerns the core of democracy.

He pointed out that the 2023 Constitution Bench verdict prescribed a selection panel including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India (CJI), whereas the new law excludes the CJI.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh acknowledged the argument but noted that the court deals with numerous pressing matters daily. The court made this decision after Bhushan mentioned that the case was listed at number 38 and unlikely to be heard on Wednesday

Earlier, on February 18, the Supreme Court had stated that the petitions challenging the appointments under the 2023 law would be considered on a priority basis.
