Shibu Soren conferred Padma Bhushan posthumously, wife Rupi Soren receives honour

New Delhi, June 23: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patriarch and veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren was posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in the field of Public Affairs at a ceremony held in New Delhi.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the honour at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The award was received on behalf of the late leader by his wife, Rupi Soren.

Shibu Soren, popularly known as ‘Dishom Guru’, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. His death marked the end of an era in Jharkhand politics, where he remained one of the most influential and respected mass leaders for over five decades.

Architect of the Jharkhand Statehood Movement

Shibu Soren is widely regarded as one of the principal architects of the movement for the creation of Jharkhand. Through decades of political mobilisation, grassroots campaigns and sustained agitation, he helped transform the demand for a separate tribal-dominated state into a powerful people’s movement. His efforts played a crucial role in the eventual formation of Jharkhand on November 15, 2000.

As the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Soren provided political direction to the statehood movement and emerged as the foremost voice of Jharkhand’s tribal communities. His leadership helped bring the aspirations and concerns of the region to the national stage.

Champion of Tribal and Marginalised Communities

Beyond the statehood movement, Soren dedicated much of his public life to advocating for the rights of tribals, Dalits, backward classes and other marginalised sections of society. He consistently raised issues related to land rights, forest rights, displacement, exploitation of tribal communities and equitable access to development.

His political career was rooted in grassroots activism, and he remained closely connected with rural and tribal populations throughout his life. Supporters credit him with giving political representation and a stronger voice to communities that had long remained on the margins of governance and policy-making.

Recognition for Lifetime Contribution to Public Affairs

The Government of India conferred the Padma Bhushan on Shibu Soren in recognition of his immense contribution to public life, social justice and public affairs.

The posthumous honour acknowledges his enduring legacy as a mass leader, tribal icon and one of the most significant figures in the history of Jharkhand. His contributions continue to shape the state’s political discourse and its ongoing pursuit of social and economic empowerment.
