Ranchi, April 2: At just 17, Shubhanshi Chakraborty is making waves in the world of environmental awareness. Her book, Past is Forward, explores how India’s traditional knowledge systems can offer solutions to today’s sustainability challenges. Officially launched at the IIC Auditorium in New Delhi recently, the book has been praised for its depth, vision, and relevance in today’s climate crisis.

Shubhanshi, who hails from Rajrappa, Jharkhand, draws inspiration from her upbringing in tribal communities, where she developed a deep appreciation for cultural traditions and environmental harmony. This connection shapes her perspective on sustainability, blending ancient wisdom with modern solutions.

Revisiting Ancient Wisdom for a Sustainable Future

In Past is Forward, Shubhanshi presents a fresh approach to sustainability, examining it through both philosophical and practical lenses. The book argues that India’s age-old environmental practices hold valuable lessons for today’s world. Supported by compelling examples, historical insights, and personal reflections, it traces the evolution of sustainable practices and emphasizes our responsibility to protect the planet.

A key theme in the book revolves around the Law of Karma:

“Once you act, you must be prepared to deal with the consequences.”

Shubhanshi uses this principle to connect human actions with environmental responsibility, urging readers to rethink their impact on the planet. She demystifies spiritual philosophies and provides actionable steps for breaking free from unsustainable habits.

A Young Storyteller with a Purpose

Beyond writing, Shubhanshi is a filmmaker and environmental advocate. She directed Natok, a film that highlights the struggles and artistry of Chhau dancers. The film has won nine prestigious awards and was selected for 18 national and international film festivals. Recognized as one of India’s most promising young filmmakers at just 15, her work has been featured in The Telegraph and The Times of India.

Currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability, she remains committed to integrating traditional knowledge with modern solutions to drive meaningful change.

Acclaimed by Thought Leaders

Past is Forward has received praise from scholars and cultural icons:

Dr. L. Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti:

“A soulful journey that connects past, present, and future—inviting us all to rediscover our sacred bond with the Earth.”

Prof. G.N. Devy:

“Shubhanshi’s work is a young and earnest call to reimagine who we are. Like Greta Thunberg’s question, ‘How dare you vandalize our future?’, Shubhanshi seems to ask, ‘How dare you forget the deep reflections of the past?’”
