The patient, Misir Mahto, 50, a resident of the Pradhankhanta area of the Baliapur block of the district, ran away from two corporate hospitals to get it at SNMMCH.
Besides Dr Bhushan, Dr Pappu Marandi, Dr Rahul Chandan, Dr Lal Bahadur, (anaesthetist), Dr CD Ram, Dr Pawan Kumar, Dr Piyush Senger and Dr Vineet Kumar were members of the team which performed the TKR.
Misir Mahto was operated free of cost under the Aayushman Bharat health scheme. Hospital sources said only Rs 82,500 came on his surgery while at corporate hospitals its fixed cost is Rs 2.50 lakh.
SNMMCH principal Dr Jyoti Ranjan Prasad and superintendent Dr Anil Kumar while highly praising Dr DP Bhushan and his team said the achievement shows that SNMMCH can do rare surgery with the available resources at minimum cost.
The principal and superintendent said that such achievement of the orthopedics department fulfills one of the parameters of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to get a post-graduate course.
The architect of the surgery Dr DP Bhushan said that this successful TKR will be a milestone in SNMMCH and the faith of people would increase for treatment in the medical college hospital.
“It was challenging for us as were going to do it for the first time in medical college. We assured the patient to provide corporate hospital-like facilities. The patient has been kept in a single-room cabin and is being provided post-operative physiotherapy two times a day which is rare in a government hospital. Dr Sangeet and Dr Sumnanand Jha are providing the same daily,” said Dr Bhushan.
