Dhanbad, Oct 31: Principal of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad, Dr. S.K. Chourasia, retired today after 28 years of dedicated service to the institution in various capacities. A farewell function was organized on the college premises to honour his long and distinguished career.

Faculty members, former principals and superintendents, retired heads of departments, and other senior doctors fondly recalled his remarkable contributions as Head of the Department of Surgery, Superintendent, and Principal.

Career Journey from Assistant Professor to Principal
Dr. Chourasia began his teaching career at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), now SNMMCH, as an Assistant Professor in 1997. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and later to Professor in 2017, completing an illustrious academic journey spanning nearly three decades.

Before joining PMCH, Dr. Chourasia served in rural healthcare as per Bihar government regulations, which mandated three years of rural service for doctors in the medical college teaching cadre.

Academic Background and Early Years
A native of Jharkhand, Dr. Chourasia completed his MBBS from Rajendra Medical College and Hospital (RMCH), Ranchi (now RIMS), during the 1978–82 session. He pursued his postgraduate studies in Surgery from Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) between 1988 and 1990. His academic foundation laid the groundwork for a long and impactful medical and teaching career.
Member of an Elite Club of SNMMCH Leaders
Dr. Chourasia joins the elite group of professors who have held all three top positions at SNMMCH — Head of Department, Superintendent, and Principal. In the 56-year history of the institution, only five professors have achieved this distinction, including Dr. Ray Sudhir Prasad, Dr. Arun Kumar, Dr Kameshwar Biswas, Dr. P.K. Sengar, and Dr. Arun Kumar Choudhary (currently Principal of Dumka Medical College).
He became HoD of Surgery in 2017, Superintendent in September 2024, and Principal in March 2025, serving until his retirement on October 31, 2025.

Initiatives and Legacy
As Superintendent, Dr. Chourasia initiated steps toward establishing a super-speciality hospital at SNMMCH. Later, as Principal, he secured approval for 10 new postgraduate seats — a milestone achievement for the institution.
At the farewell event, Superintendent Dr. D.K. Gindauria, former Principal Dr. Kameshwar Biswas, former Superintendents Dr. H.K. Singh and Dr. Anil Kumar, and former HoDs Dr. U.K. Ojha and Dr. Ganesh Kumar, along with senior faculty members, praised Dr. Chourasia’s leadership, commitment, and lasting contributions to SNMMCH.
