Scrap Disposal Boosts Revenue and Efficiency

Railway officials said scrap disposal remains a key priority for Indian Railways as it generates substantial non-fare revenue while supporting the Government of India’s Swachhta Abhiyan.

They added that timely disposal of obsolete and unserviceable materials improves operational efficiency, optimises asset utilisation and helps maintain cleaner railway premises.

‘Zero Scrap’ Mission Underway

The record performance has been attributed to the guidance of A.K. Jain, General Manager, South Eastern Railway, who has set an ambitious target of achieving “Zero Scrap” across the zone by October 2026.

Under the initiative, the Stores Department has undertaken an extensive drive to identify, segregate and dispose of accumulated scrap from depots, workshops, sheds and other railway establishments.

As part of the campaign, 15 scrap-generating units under South Eastern Railway had achieved “Zero Scrap” status by the end of July 2026.

Railway authorities said the drive will continue across the zone to make all identified scrap-generating units scrap-free by October, further strengthening housekeeping standards, operational efficiency and non-fare revenue generation.
