Gujarat govt says 4,000 pharma manufacturing units employ over 50,000 persons in State

Ahmedabad, Dec 15: The state government of Gujarat, which is getting ready to host the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit, has stated that Gujarat has long been the leader of India’s pharmaceutical industry and a centre for pharmaceutical production and exports.

According to a state government release, nearly 4,000 manufacturing units in Gujarat employ over 50,000 people in the production of allopathic, homoeopathic, ayurvedic and cosmetic drugs.

Based on official data, the state is responsible for 53% of medical device manufacturing in India and 78% of cardiac stent manufacture in the nation. Gujarat is home to over 40% of the country’s contract research organizations.

In January of next year, Gandhinagar will host the 10th Vibrant Gujarat event, which attempts to promote the state as the most favourable destination for investments.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had earlier aimed to emphasize the state’s leading position in the pharmaceutical industry ahead of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit.

India’s pharmaceutical production

“Gujarat contributes 30 per cent of India’s pharmaceutical production and 28 per cent of total pharma export,” Gujarat CM had stated.

Experts predict Gujarat’s portion of the global pharmaceutical vertical will soar, with over 700 pharma manufacturing licenses being granted between 2020 and 2022.

While 753 units are authorized by the WHO for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), 130 registered pharmaceutical companies in Gujarat have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).

According to the state government, Gujarat’s pharmaceutical industry is renowned for its inventiveness and has broadened its scope of operations to encompass the manufacturing of generics, research and development (R&D), bulk drug production, contract research and manufacturing organizations (CRAMS), and new chemical entities (NCE).
