Supreme Court transfers RG Kar doctor’s rape-murder case to Calcutta HC

New Delhi, Dec 17: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the transfer of the RG Kar Medical College trainee doctor rape and murder case to the Calcutta High Court, directing that all case records be forwarded accordingly.

A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma also instructed that a copy of the latest status report be provided to the victim’s parents.

The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter in 2024 following the brutal crime, which sent shockwaves across the country.

The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9 last year, and Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy the following day.

On January 20, a Kolkata trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till death.

Despite the conviction, the Supreme Court has continued to oversee several related concerns, including issues linked to the unauthorised absence of doctors.

While initiating suo motu proceedings, the court had also set up a National Task Force on August 20 last year to frame guidelines aimed at strengthening the safety and security of medical professionals in the aftermath of the incident, which had sparked widespread protests across West Bengal and beyond.
