PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, January 23: A Tata Motors employee from Govindpur Housing Colony in Jamshedpur has fallen victim to a cyber fraud, losing ₹1.55 lakh from his bank account after being tricked into installing a fake bank application, police said.

The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Govindpur police station, and a written complaint has been lodged at the Jamshedpur Cyber Police Station.

Fake WhatsApp Message Triggers Fraud

The victim, identified as Chittaranjan Swai, told police that he received a WhatsApp message on Wednesday night claiming that his bank application was outdated.

The message warned that failure to update the app could disrupt banking services. Believing it to be genuine, Swai clicked on the link.

After clicking the link, another link to a purported bank application was sent to his WhatsApp, which he downloaded and installed.

When he faced difficulties operating the app, Swai received a phone call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a bank employee and offered help.

During the conversation, the caller fraudulently obtained sensitive banking details, including the account number, ATM card number, and CVV.

₹1.55 Lakh Withdrawn Overnight

On Thursday morning, Swai checked his bank account and discovered that ₹1.55 lakh had been fraudulently withdrawn.

Realising he had been cheated, he immediately contacted his bank and later approached the Cyber Police Station to lodge a complaint.

Cyber police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said that bank accounts involved, mobile numbers, and transaction details are being examined.

Police have advised the public to avoid clicking on unknown links and never share confidential banking information over phone calls or messages.
