Jamshedpur, October 13: Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated power companies, has partnered with Imperial College London to explore new avenues for research, technological innovation and knowledge exchange aimed at accelerating the transition to cleaner, smarter and more resilient energy systems.
MoU to Explore Key Energy Technologies
The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration across key areas of the evolving energy landscape, including grid flexibility, energy storage, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications in energy, digital energy systems, and advanced technologies for industrial decarbonisation.
The partnership aims to combine Tata Power’s experience in developing and operating large-scale energy infrastructure with Imperial College London’s research capabilities in engineering, digital technologies, energy systems and decarbonisation. By bringing industry expertise and academic research together, the collaboration seeks to develop innovative responses to real-world energy challenges and explore their potential applications in India and international markets.
Partnership Aligns with India–UK Clean Energy Vision
The initiative comes as India and the United Kingdom deepen bilateral cooperation in clean energy, climate action and emerging technologies.
Under the India–UK Vision 2035, both countries have identified energy storage and grid transformation as priority areas for closer collaboration, alongside joint efforts in artificial intelligence, renewable energy, hydrogen and carbon capture. The vision also highlights the Net Zero Innovation Partnership as a platform for advancing deep-tech solutions and creating new opportunities in climate innovation.
UK Highlights Potential for Innovation and Economic Growth
UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the collaboration demonstrated the potential of combining British research capabilities with Indian industrial expertise to deliver tangible benefits. He noted that closer trade cooperation could help translate innovation into cleaner, smarter energy solutions while supporting employment and economic growth in both countries.
Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, said the partnership reflected the complementary strengths of the two countries.
“The partnership between Imperial College London and Tata Power is a great example of the UK and India combining their strengths to turn innovation into impact. Bringing together world-class UK research and Indian industrial expertise will help accelerate next-generation energy solutions, unlock new commercial opportunities and support sustainable growth in both countries,” he said.
Tata Power Focuses on Grid Reliability and Energy Storage
Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Power, highlighted the growing importance of grid reliability, energy storage and digital technologies as India expands its renewable energy capacity and responds to changing electricity demand.
“India’s energy transition is entering a phase where scale, flexibility and reliability will be as important as the pace of renewable energy growth. The next generation of grids, storage and digital energy systems will need to work together to meet a rapidly evolving demand landscape. Our collaboration with Imperial College will help solve real-world industry challenges with deep research and new thinking and explore solutions that can be relevant not only to India’s energy journey, but also to the wider global transition,” he said.
Combining Industrial Expertise with Advanced Research
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to translating scientific research and technological advances into practical applications. Tata Power brings expertise spanning power generation, transmission, distribution and renewable energy, while Imperial College London contributes multidisciplinary capabilities across science, engineering, business, economics and advanced energy technologies.
Professor Mary Ryan, Vice Provost (Research and Enterprise) at Imperial College London, said Tata Power’s extensive industry experience and operational scale made it a valuable partner in developing cleaner and more resilient energy systems.
She highlighted Imperial’s strengths in frontier research across science, engineering and business, as well as its approach to convergence science, which brings together expertise from different disciplines to address complex challenges that conventional approaches to innovation may struggle to solve.
Collaboration Targets Cleaner and More Resilient Energy Systems
By combining research excellence with industrial capabilities, the collaboration aims to explore and demonstrate solutions that could improve grid flexibility, strengthen energy security, facilitate the integration of renewable power and reduce carbon emissions from energy-intensive industries.
Beyond technological development, the partnership is expected to create opportunities for sustained knowledge exchange and closer engagement between Indian industry and British academia.
As both countries pursue their net-zero ambitions, the collaboration could help bridge the gap between research and commercial application, supporting the development of scalable energy solutions for a lower-carbon future.
