Panaji, May 3: A tragic stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao, Goa, early Saturday morning claimed at least six lives and left over 50 people injured, according to officials.

The incident occurred around 4–5 AM during the annual Lairai Devi jatra, a major religious gathering that draws large crowds each year.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

The Prime Minister also spoke to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to assess the situation and ensure all necessary measures were being taken.

Chief Minister Sawant, who rushed to Shirgao following the tragedy, confirmed that this was the first incident of its kind in the state and ordered a thorough inquiry into the cause of the stampede.

He said the state administration has been directed to investigate the circumstances and take corrective steps.

The situation remains under close watch, with the Chief Minister personally monitoring the developments.
