Uddhav, Raj Thackeray announce Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance for BMC polls

Mumbai, Dec 24: Ending months of uncertainty, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Wednesday formally declared an alliance ahead of the January 15 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, a move expected to significantly reshape Mumbai’s civic political landscape.

Speaking at a joint press interaction, the two leaders signalled a long-term political understanding, with Uddhav Thackeray emphasising that the coming together of the two parties is meant to be enduring rather than tactical.

While details of seat distribution for the BMC polls were not disclosed, Uddhav Thackeray confirmed that seat-sharing arrangements have already been finalised for the Nashik Municipal Corporation, which goes to the polls on the same day as Mumbai and 27 other municipal bodies across Maharashtra.

He added that discussions are ongoing to extend the alliance to other civic corporations in the state.

Uddhav also made it clear that the alliance remains open to other political forces that are uncomfortable with the current political direction under the BJP, indicating the possibility of a broader opposition consolidation at the municipal level.
