New Delhi, Dec 12: The Union Cabinet today approved a budget of ₹11,718 crore for the 2027 Census, which will be conducted digitally for the first time across the country. Around 30 lakh personnel will be deployed for the work.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday that the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared three key proposals. The first is related to the 2027 Census, for which the budget has been approved.

The second decision focuses on major reforms in the coal sector through the Coal Setu initiative, and the third concerns measures for farmers’ welfare.

Vaishnaw said the nationwide Census will be carried out in two phases during 2026–2027. The first phase, covering house listing and housing data, will be conducted from April to September 2026.

The second phase, which includes population enumeration, will begin in February 2027. He added that the digital framework for the Census has been designed with strong data protection measures.

On coal production, Vaishnaw said India is moving toward self-reliance. In 2024–2025, the country produced over one billion tonnes of coal for the first time, reducing dependence on imports and saving about ₹60,000 crore.
