Ranchi, Sept 12: Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced in Ranchi on Friday that both regular and contract workers of Coal India will now have their dependents receive an additional compensation of ₹1 crore in case of accidental death. This benefit will come into effect from September 17, on Workers’ Day.

During the COVID period, the ex gratia amount was increased from ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh. Regarding the issue of outstanding dues requested by the state government, Reddy said that a committee formed through coordination between the Coal Ministry and the state government is actively working on it.

Coal Ministry’s Priorities

The Union Coal Minister stated that the primary goal of the Coal Ministry is not revenue generation but to meet the country’s coal demand for a developed India.

There are currently 143 coal mines whose closure has not yet been completed. Considering water usage and environmental protection, the closure process has been initiated, with nine mines already shut down. The remaining mines are expected to be closed within the next two to three years.

New Master Plan for Jharia

Regarding the new master plan for Jharia, the Minister said that a 60-member team has been appointed through the joint efforts of the Centre and the state government, with the Coal Ministry appointing 50 members.

The plan focuses on providing rehabilitation for displaced people, including employment, housing, hospitals, and schools.

Discussion on Illegal Mining

The Minister noted that accidents caused by illegal mining are a serious concern and said he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister. Coal companies and the ministry are focusing on safety measures, employing technology to reduce accidents, and issuing continuous instructions to officials.

Emphasis on Domestic Coal Production

Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Coal Ministry is emphasizing increasing domestic coal production. Considering the rising demand for critical minerals in India and globally, the government is working to promote higher domestic production.
