Ranchi, November 13: The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Usha Martin University organized a special documentary screening event featuring two student-produced films — The Forgotten Fishermen and Neer Gatha.

The event was graced by Meghnath, acclaimed filmmaker and activist, as the chief guest alongside the Vice Chancellor Prof. Madhulika Kaushik, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Milind, Registrar Dr. Shiv Pratap Verma.

The programme began with a formal welcome and felicitation of Meghnath, who has been documenting the lives and struggles of Jharkhand’s tribal and marginalized communities for over four decades.

A recipient of the two National Film Awards, Meghnath is widely known for his impactful documentaries such as Naachi Se Baanchi, Loha Garam Hai, and Development Flows from the Barrel of the Gun.

The first documentary, The Forgotten Fishermen, explored the lives of the Nayak community near Getalsud Dam, highlighting their traditional livelihood and the challenges posed by development projects. The film, guided by filmmaker Biju Toppo, was praised for its authenticity and sensitivity.

The second documentary, Neer Gatha, offered a lyrical portrayal of Jharkhand’s famous waterfalls — Jonha, Hundru, Dassam, and Sita Falls — blending their natural beauty with the folk tales and cultural traditions surrounding them.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Kaushik appreciated the students’ creative efforts and emphasized the importance of visual storytelling in preserving local heritage. Meghnath also commended the young filmmakers for their commitment to meaningful cinema.

The event concluded with applause for the student filmmakers, mentors, and faculty.
