New Delhi, March 10: Lalit Modi, the former IPL chairman, has faced repercussions for surrendering his Indian passport and acquiring citizenship of the small Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.
Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Jotham Napat, has ordered the Citizenship Commission to revoke Modi’s Vanuatu passport with immediate effect. Napat confirmed that he had instructed the Commission to annul Modi’s passport without delay.
Vanuatu’s Prime Minister stated that he was informed that Interpol had rejected the alert notice sent by the Indian government regarding Lalit Modi twice, citing a lack of judicial evidence.

Napat emphasized that holding a Vanuatu passport is a privilege, not a right, and that individuals should only acquire citizenship based on legitimate grounds.
India’s fugitive Lalit Modi had surrendered his passport on March 7 at the Indian High Commission in London. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the news, stating that Lalit Modi had indeed submitted his passport.
Lalit Modi fled India to the UK 15 years ago, and since then, India has repeatedly sought his extradition. He faces charges of money laundering and tax evasion, allegations he has consistently denied.
