Defending the new name, Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan alleged that Mahatma Gandhi’s name was added to NREGA in 2009 keeping the elections in mind, turning it into MGNREGA.

As Chouhan responded in the House, Opposition members continued shouting slogans against the Bill and even moved into the Well of the House in protest.
Opposition MPs also tore copies of the Bill and disrupted the proceedings. Earlier, they had staged a protest march inside the Parliament complex, demanding the withdrawal of the legislation.
