New Delhi, Dec 18: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-G RAM G] Bill, 2025, amid loud protests and sloganeering by Opposition members.

Opposition MPs strongly opposed the Bill, accusing the Modi government of disrespecting Mahatma Gandhi and weakening the provisions of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Defending the new name, Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan alleged that Mahatma Gandhi’s name was added to NREGA in 2009 keeping the elections in mind, turning it into MGNREGA.

As Chouhan responded in the House, Opposition members continued shouting slogans against the Bill and even moved into the Well of the House in protest.

Opposition MPs also tore copies of the Bill and disrupted the proceedings. Earlier, they had staged a protest march inside the Parliament complex, demanding the withdrawal of the legislation.

Notably, the Bill had been taken up for an intense debate in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, which lasted nearly 14 hours and concluded at 1.35 am. As many as 98 MPs participated in the discussion.
