Voting underway for assembly by-polls on 13 seats in seven states

New Delhi, July 10: Assembly by-elections are being held today on 13 assembly seats of seven states including Rupauli in Bihar. Voting is going on from 7 am on these seats amid tight security, which will continue till 6 pm.

The 13 assembly seats include Rupauli of Bihar, Amarwara of Madhya Pradesh, Badrinath and Manglaur of Uttarakhand, Jalandhar West of Punjab, Raiganj, Ranaghat South, Bagda and Maniktala of West Bengal, Vikravandi of Tamil Nadu, and Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh seats of Himachal Pradesh.

The results of the by-elections being held on these seats be announced on July 13.

EC issued by-poll notification on June 14

Notably, 13 assembly seats had become vacant due to the death of legislators and the resignation of some MLAs after winning the Lok Sabha elections.

After 13 assembly seats in seven states became vacant, the Election Commission issued a notification on June 14 to hold by-elections for these seats. The last date for nominations was June 21. Scrutiny was completed on June 24, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations was June 26.

Reason for 13 assembly seats being vacant

In Rupouli (Bihar), the seat was vacated due to the resignation of legislator Bima Bharti. In Ranaghat (West Bengal), Mukutmani Adhikari resigned from his position. Krishna Kalyani, the legislator from Raiganj (West Bengal), also resigned. In Bagda (West Bengal), Biswajit Das resigned from his role. The Maniktala (West Bengal) seat became vacant due to the death of legislator Sudhan Pande.

In Vikravandi (Tamil Nadu), the seat was vacated following the death of legislator Thiru N.P. The Amarwara (Madhya Pradesh) seat was vacated due to the resignation of legislator Kamlesh Pratap. In Badrinath (Uttarakhand), Rajendra Singh resigned from the seat. Mangalore (Uttarakhand) saw a vacancy due to the death of legislator Sarwat Ansari. The Jalandhar (West Punjab) seat was vacated following the resignation of legislator Sheetal Angural.

In Dehra (Himachal Pradesh), legislator Hoshiyar Singh resigned. In Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh), Ashish Sharma also resigned, and KL Thakur’s resignation led to the vacancy of the Nalagarh (Himachal Pradesh) seat.
