SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, Nov 14: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day today, doctors, members of social organizations and people of different walks of life ran for the awareness of the Coal City people from the danger of a silent killer (diabetes).

The ‘Diabetes Run’ was jointly organized by the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) Jharkhand chapter, the Diabetes and Heart Research Centre (DHRC), Dhanbad Action Group (DAG) and branches of the Lions and Rotary Clubs.

The run kick-started at the City Centre at 7 am and terminated at Gandhi Sadan near Randhir Verma Chowk where  RSSDI national executive member Dr NK Singh,  Diabetes Centre’s  Dr Ajit Patwari, DHRC director Dr Leena Singh shed light on preventive measures for diabetes and urged the people to follow for safety of life.

Dr NK Singh, on the occasion, said that the ‘Diabetes Run’ was organized for awareness of people that it can be prevented by physical activities and eating a healthy diet. “Through this run, we wanted to give a message that physical activities are the best way to prevent the silent killer (diabetes),” he said. Dr Singh also focussed on healthy food items needed to stop diabetes.

On the occasion, the DHRC and the DAG also installed stalls of healthy breakfast items for awareness.

Dr  Ajit Kumar Tiwari, on the occasion, said that the theme of this year’s  World Diabetes Day is ‘Know the Danger of Diabetes’ for protection.  “Food habits and lifestyle are the most dangerous factors for diabetes. It can be checked only by a minimum 30 30-minute daily walk and avoiding white food such as sugar, salt and refined wheat flour,” he said.

DHRC  director Dr Leena Singh, on the occasion, especially urged and suggested women folks try to do maximum household work themselves using traditional methods such as grinding species on ‘Silbat-Lohri’ rather than in a mixer grinder, doing dough flour herself regularly to avoid diabetes.
