Dhanbad, Feb 28: The 1st IEEE International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Development in Electrical Engineering kicked off at IIT ISM Dhanbad on Friday. This three-day conference, organized by the IIT ISM’s Department of Electrical Engineering, aims to address key issues related to power systems, smart grids, power electronics, and their applications.
As a pioneering event under the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) banner, the conference aims to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government agencies to drive innovations in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
The organizers highlighted that the conference would focus on cutting-edge technologies, including the integration of renewable energy, advancements in power electronics, automation, electrification of transportation, smart grid technologies, resilient monitoring, and intelligent systems.
Rakesh Ranjan, Additional Secretary of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), was the chief guest and formally inaugurated the conference. He encouraged researchers to explore new areas of study to drive advancements in the field.

Focus on Emerging Technologies and Climate Change
Prof. S.C. Srivastava, Director of the IIT Kanpur-La Trobe University Research Academy, delivered an address emphasizing the need for smart and sustainable practices in electrical engineering, particularly in response to climate change triggered by industrialization.
He encouraged collaboration among researchers to achieve sustainability goals, highlighting the importance of deploying research and development initiatives to address global energy challenges.
Prof. Biplab Sikdar from the National University of Singapore, the guest of honor, expressed his hope that the conference would serve as a platform for exchanging ideas on a broad range of topics.
Prof. Akshay Rathore, Program Leader at the Singapore Institute of Technology, stressed the shared responsibility of ensuring sustainable development in electrical engineering. He highlighted the importance of leveraging renewable energy and implementing practical research solutions.
“As humans, we have taken a lot from nature. It is now our responsibility to drive sustainable development through renewable energy and practical implementation of research,” he remarked.

Institutional Commitment and Research Collaboration
IIT ISM Director, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, welcomed the participants and urged them to engage fully in the discussions throughout the conference. He reaffirmed the institution’s support for advancing smart and sustainable development goals.
Prof. Sukanta Das, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, provided an overview of the department’s history and achievements. Prof. Gauri Shankar concluded the session by delivering the vote of thanks.
