New Delhi, Jan 1: With 636 new infections in the last 24 hours as opposed to 841 the day before, India saw a minor decline in the daily increase in Covid-19 cases, according to the Union Health Ministry. The number of active cases increased to 4,394.
Three more deaths linked to the virus were reported in the nation. The three deaths—two in Kerala and one in Tamil Nadu—have increased the death toll to 5,33,364, according to figures released by the health ministry at 8 am.
As many as 548 persons recovered from COVID-19 in the last day, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 4.44 crore (4,44,76,150), according to the ministry.

The case fatality rate was 1.8%, whilst the national recovery rate was calculated to be 98.81%.
Until now, the nation has reported 4.50 crore (4,50,13,908) cases since the Covid-19 outbreak in January 2020.
JN.1 sub-variant
Up until December 5, the daily case count had fallen to double digits, but the advent of a new sub-variant JN.1 and the cold weather has caused the cases to rise once more.
As of December 29, 2023, nine states had reported 178 instances of the JN.1 sub-variant, with Goa reporting the highest count at 47, followed by Kerala with 41 cases.
Other states reporting JN.1 cases include 36 in Gujarat, 34 in Karnataka, nine in Maharashtra, four each in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, two in Telangana and one in Delhi.
