Daltonganj, February 17: 30 inmates of the central jail here have staked claim to their juvenility at the time of occurrence of the offence.

This claim is in the wake of the pan India campaign for identifying juveniles in prison and rendering legal assistance to them.

NALSA campaign

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) launched the pan India campaign. It went down to every state to follow it up.

In Jharkhand, the JHALSA directed its district units to find such claims of juvenility.

DLSA Chairman Niraj Kumar Srivastav, the principal district and sessions judge, went out to collect such claims.

Para legal volunteers

The DALSA put in its three para legal volunteers, all convicts here in the central jail, to assist in the identification of such claimants cum inmates of juvenility.

DLSA Secretary Arpit Shrivastava said 17 of the 30 claimants had approached the Authority to provide them with legal assistance.

The remaining 13 may like to have their lawyers bolster their claims of their juvenility at the time of occurrence of the offence.

Adult Criminal Justice System

This drive is to screen such inmates of the jail who face the Adult Criminal Justice System when, in fact, they were juveniles at the time of the offence, which will bring them legal relief in a significant way.
