Daltonganj, Feb 23: A bear mauled a 40-year-old vulnerable tribal Lakhan Korwa under the limits of Sarwat Pahar of the Kutku range of the Palamu Tiger Reserve.
Confirming this incident, deputy director of the north division of PTR P K Jena said the bear attacked him most fiercely, and he, too, fought for his life equally fiercely.
Extensive treatment at CHC and Sadar Hospital Garhwa
The medical officer in charge of the Boundary Community Health Centre, Dr V K Rajak, said the bear victim had deep lacerated wounds on his face, and his muscles were severely damaged.
Korwa had his wrist fractured, too, in his fight with the bear.
The bear had attacked Korwa late in the evening of February 21. His family took him to the Bhandarya community health centre at noon on February 22, where he was immediately attended to.
Dr Rajak said when this Korwa was brought to the health centre, he had no about of bleeding then. He was referred to the Sadar Hospital Garhwa after necessary treatment like wound wash, anti-rabies shot, stitching, etc.

Referred to RIMS due to deep-seated wounds
A noted surgeon, Amit Kumar of the Sadar Hospital Garhwa, said the bear victim had complete first-hand treatment for his wounds at the community health centre Bhandarya.
He was already given their rabies shot. He was put on IV fluid here.
Both the doctors said the bear victim was given loose suture to prevent the growth of the virus somewhat; his wounds were so stitched that they had exposure to outside environments. It’s a medical device to avoid virus moving into the blood, asserted Dr Amit Kumar.
Dr Amit Kumar further said the victim was given an immune globulin shot, too, and as his wounds were deep-seated, he was referred to RIMS Ranchi, and a 108 ambulance was arranged for him.
Civil surgeon Garhwa Dr Ashok Kumar said, “Doctors and paramedics at our Sadar Hospital Garhwa make all possible efforts to provide the best available medicare to patients. Persons having wounds caused by wildlife are taken good care of within the facilities available here.”
PTR to cover medical expenses
Deputy Director North Division PTR Jena said the PTR management stands with the family. The PTR will meet his medical expenses. The family of the victim has gone to RIMS, too. A forest guard of the PTR is with the family of Korwa in RIMS Ranchi.
This is the first episode of a bear attacking humans in 2024.
